The Game[]

Asterix & Obelix XXL 2 is a 3rd-person action-adventure with a focus on large battles. The game is full of parodies and references to popular videogames, in the form of characters and environment elements.

Story[]

Julius Caesar's henchman - centurion Larry Craft - disguises himself as Getafix and gathers the druids Battermix, Kerosene and Suchafuss in the forest. He signals the hiding legionaries to surround them and take them hostage. Caesar is delighted, and the Romans leave the forest. All of this happens while Caesar's former spy - Sam Shieffer - is watching. He takes Getafix's golden sickle and goes to the Gaulish village.

Sam arrives to Vitalstatistix's house and claims that Getafix has become a traitor. Asterix does not believe him, so Sam throws the golden sickle towards him as an evidence. He explains that Getafix is now in Las Vegum - a large amusement park located in Rome. Asterix and Obelix with Sam Shieffer go to Rome.

On the journey through Las Vegum, Asterix and Obelix battle a giant fireball-shooting legionary named Dethmach and free the druids one by one. They almost die in a lava pit, but Sam Shieffer saves their lives, and they confront Larry Craft and his legion. They also fight an army of Caesar's clones, before battling Dethmach for the final time and freeing Getafix from SeizeUs Palace.

Getafix tells Caesar to order his troops to leave Armorica, who uses an Internetus messenger to deliver the message. The Gauls return to their village and celebrate with a banquet.

Other Versions[]

The PSP and Nintendo DS versions are named Asterix & Obelix XXL 2: Mission Wifix.

The PSP version has somewhat different jump physics: turning in the middle of a jump is much harder to control. It also features multiplayer levels where two pairs of players compete against each other: the first pair is Asterix and Obelix, the second is Caesar and Larry Craft.

The Nintendo DS version is a sidescroller. The player travels through Las Vegum alone since Asterix and Obelix are never seen traveling together. If the player switches Asterix, Obelix will dissappear and Asterix travels alone. Whenever the player enters a battle, the camera will be stuck in place and Romans appear from the left and the right side of the screen. The six levels shown in the game look completely different and don't resemble the levels as seen in the PC, PS2 and PSP version.

A remaster of the game was released in November 2018.

  • Comparison xxl2

Comparison between the title font and the cover art

The Remaster was released in the US under title Roman Rumble in Las Vegum: Asterix & Obelix XXL 2.
  • The game was released with two different covers. One of them is in the style of the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas cover. The other one is just normal artwork.
    • The font choice of the Mission: Las Vegum text is the same as the Vice City font of Grand Theft Auto Vice City
  • The early cover art was hand-drawn and had the same style as the XXL 1 cover art.
  • It was never explained or shown how exactly Getafix got locked up in Las Vegum, but a guess could be that while collecting the ingredients for the magic potion, Getafix got ambushed by the Romans and taken to Las Vegum, including the 3 other druids (Battermix, Suchafuss and Kerosene) sometime afterwards, which eventually lead to the events of XXL 2.
  • Asterix & Obelix XXL 2 is the only game in the series to not be released in the US.
  • The PC version features many audio glitches.
  • In the starting cutscenes (sea, top-down village view) the leitmotif for XXL 1 can be heard.
